Phoenix

Every time I go to the doctor(s), I find myself in a small percentile of people. Usually I’ve fallen into the “not responding to medication” category. Or the “macroadenoma” vs. micro category. This last week in Phoenix was no exception.

After having my MRI, my first stop was the endocrinologist. My lab work and pituitary functions all look great and so I found myself in the 20% of people who don’t experience pituitary problems after a surgery of this type. Therefore at this time…. no medication necessary. He told me to continue running monthly prolactin levels, but that I wouldn’t need any more blood work for 6 months, and he’d see me then. YES! I screamed!

Next stop, my neuro surgeon. He was running a bit late, as he just finished removing a pituitary tumor. He was still in his surgical geer, and the iodine from scrubbing was still visable on his upper arms.

After looking over my x-rays and reviewing my lab results, he told me I fell into the 25% of people having had this surgery, that had a low, normal prolactin level without having to be on some form of medication to control it. He told me I didn’t have to come back for a year! Yes! I screamed!

He also told me I could blow my nose or sneeze even, without worrying if the fat graph would come shooting out of my nose, along with the rest of my brains. He said I looked great and asked me how I felt. I hugged him and told him he was somewhat of a celebrity around our house. That the quality of my life had improved immensly. I thanked him for my life. I then asked him how he was doing… and hoped that his earlier surgery had gone well. He looked somewhat surprised, as if no one had ever asked him that. He thanked me for asking and then said the surgery “went well, it went really well”. I touched his arm and told him I was feeling like a real “lucky som-bitch!” He laughed and said he’d see me in a year.

And to my dear friend who introduced me to the Barrow Neurological Institute. SHE SAVED MY LIFE!!!!! THANK YOU!

Prayer and education. You can’t beat it.
