Limited Engagement

My Uncle Jim died last Thursday at the age of 74. (My mother’s brother). Upon a diagnosis of lung cancer only 2 months ago, it rapidly spread to his bones. He lived a very colorful life. Seemingly, the last 2 months gave him just enough time to get his affairs in order and say his good bye’s without lingering too long in pain.

Needless to say, the longer I live… the more funerals I attend. You can’t help but think about your own mortality and whether or not you made a difference to the world you live in.

After losing a loved one, or being faced with your own mortality, I seriously doubt anyone has ever thought….

I wish I’d spent less time with my parents before they passed…

I wish I’d spent less time with my children before they grew up…

I wish I’d been more serious and laughed less…

I wish I’d had more arguments with my spouse…

I wish I’d worked more and played less???

Go on that fishing trip with your dad. Tell your parents how much you love them.
Take the afternoon off and go watch your kid’s little league game.
Tell a joke a day.
Hug your wife or your husband and remember the day you promised to love them forever.
Take that vacation you’ve been putting off.

We have a plaque in our kitchen that reads, “Live Simply. Laugh Often. Love Deeply.” And if there is one thing I have learned, it’s that I need more time than I do money.

It’s a limited engagement for us all. Make it count!
